Sheltered bay with coral reef, beach bars and a laid-back honeymoon vibe
Unawatuna curves around a sheltered bay on Sri Lanka's southern coast, its calm waters protected by an offshore coral reef that keeps the swells gentle and the swimming safe. The village has an easy, unhurried energy that draws couples looking for barefoot days and beach-bar evenings without pretension.
Start the day snorkelling over colourful coral just metres from shore, then grab lunch at a shaded beachfront cafe before walking the fort walls of nearby Galle. Late afternoons are for the short hike up Rumassala Hill to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, where the sunset panorama stretches from Galle Fort to the open ocean.
Shaped like a near-perfect crescent, Unawatuna's bay faces south and catches the full warmth of the tropical sun while the reef offshore breaks incoming swells into gentle ripples. The beach is compact, around 800 metres end to end, lined with palm-shaded restaurants and colourful boutique guesthouses. It feels intimate rather than small, with enough going on to fill your days but nothing so loud that it breaks the spell.
The underwater world here is exceptional for such an accessible spot. The reef supports schools of parrotfish, angelfish and butterflyfish, while green turtles cruise through the seagrass beds just beyond the breakwater. Jungle Beach, a ten-minute walk through coastal forest from the main bay, is a quieter cove with excellent visibility and fewer snorkellers. For something different, glass-bottom boat rides reveal the coral gardens without getting wet.
Galle Fort is just five kilometres up the coast, and most couples visit at least once for the rampart sunset walk, the craft boutiques along Pedlar Street and dinner at one of the fort's converted-warehouse restaurants. Back in Unawatuna, evenings are low-key. Fresh seafood at Kingfisher, tacos and margaritas at The Hideout, or a cocktail on the sand at Wijaya Beach Club. The pace stays gentle, the stars come out early, and the reef keeps everything wonderfully still.
December to March is peak season with warm, dry days averaging 28 to 30 degrees Celsius, clear skies and calm reef-protected waters ideal for snorkelling. February through April sees the least rainfall and the warmest seas, reaching 29 degrees. The southwest monsoon from May to September brings heavier rain and reduced underwater visibility, though morning sunshine is still common.
Unawatuna is 150 km south of Bandaranaike International Airport, around two and a half hours by car via the Southern Expressway. The scenic coastal train from Colombo Fort to Galle takes about two hours, and Unawatuna is a short five-kilometre tuk-tuk ride from Galle station. We arrange private airport transfers for all our honeymoon couples, and the drive pairs naturally with a stop at Galle Fort along the way.
