River meets ocean at this west coast resort town with watersports and spas
Bentota sits where the Bentota River meets the Indian Ocean, creating a unique landscape of golden beaches on one side and calm lagoon waters on the other. It has been Sri Lanka's premier resort town for decades, drawing honeymooners with its polished five-star hotels, Ayurvedic spas and warm, swimmable seas.
Your days here split naturally between coast and river. Spend the morning on jet skis or snorkelling off the reef, then switch to a tranquil boat safari through mangrove channels alive with monitor lizards and kingfishers. Evenings bring long dinners at resort restaurants where the tables face the sea and the wine list runs deep.
Just 65 km south of Colombo, Bentota occupies a narrow peninsula with the ocean on the west and the river lagoon curving around to the east. The beach stretches for several unbroken kilometres, wide enough that even peak-season crowds dissolve into the landscape. At the southern tip, the sand narrows to a spit where you can stand with waves on both sides.
Bentota is Sri Lanka's watersports capital. The lagoon's flat water is perfect for water-skiing, wakeboarding and kayaking, while the ocean side offers reliable surf breaks for beginners and good snorkelling around the reef. Away from the water, Brief Garden is a remarkable two-hectare tropical estate designed by Bevis Bawa, and the Galapata Vihara temple sits hidden in the jungle on the riverbank, dating back over 800 years.
The resort strip along the beach is home to some of the island's best-known hotels. Taj Bentota occupies a headland with views down both coasts, its Jiva Spa offering traditional Ayurvedic treatments in open-air pavilions. Saman Villas perches dramatically on a rocky promontory, where couples can dine privately on a candlelit terrace suspended above the waves. The food is refined but relaxed, with most restaurants serving Sri Lankan rice and curry alongside international menus.
November to April is the dry season on the west coast, with sunny skies, temperatures between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius and calm seas suited to all watersports. January to March is the most settled period with minimal rainfall. The southwest monsoon brings heavier rain and choppier seas from May through October, though mornings often stay dry.
Bentota is one of the most accessible beach destinations in Sri Lanka, just 100 km and roughly 90 minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport via the E01 Expressway. The coastal railway from Colombo Fort stops at Bentota station, making a scenic alternative for the journey south. We arrange private transfers directly from the airport for all our honeymoon packages, so you can be poolside before lunch.
