About Culture & Heritage Destinations

Culture & Heritage

Sri Lanka packs over 2,500 years of recorded history into an island smaller than Scotland, and for honeymoon couples the cultural destinations here offer an extraordinary journey through ancient kingdoms, sacred sites and colonial-era architecture — all set against lush tropical scenery that makes every stop feel like a film set.

The ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most iconic landmark — a 200-metre column of rock crowned with the ruins of a 5th-century palace, surrounded by landscaped gardens, water features and remarkable frescoes painted into the cliff face. Climbing together at sunrise, with views stretching across jungle canopy to distant mountains, is one of the most memorable experiences on the island.

Inland, the hillside city of Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and remains the spiritual heart of Sri Lankan Buddhism. The Temple of the Tooth Relic draws pilgrims from across the country, while the surrounding botanical gardens, lake and misty mountain setting give the city a peaceful, romantic atmosphere quite unlike the coast.

On the southern tip, the colonial fort town of Galle is one of Sri Lanka's most charming destinations — a walled city of boutique hotels, art galleries, independent cafés and Dutch-era architecture overlooking the Indian Ocean. Walking the ramparts at sunset has become something of a honeymoon tradition, and the town's compact size means everything is within a few minutes' stroll.

Further north, the sacred city of Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka's capital for over a thousand years and is home to some of the oldest Buddhist monuments anywhere in the world. The ancient dagobas, moonstone carvings and the sacred Bodhi Tree — said to be grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment — reward couples who venture beyond the usual tourist trail.
