Laid-back surf town on the east coast with empty beaches and lagoon safaris
Arugam Bay has the barefoot, salt-in-your-hair energy that most beach towns only pretend to offer. This small fishing village on Sri Lanka's southeast coast draws surfers to its world-class point breaks, but couples who simply want empty golden beaches, lagoon kayaking and jungle-fringed cafes will feel equally at home.
Rise with the sun for a surf lesson at Whisky Point, then spend the afternoon on a boat safari through Pottuvil Lagoon, where crocodiles lurk beneath water lilies and elephants appear at the tree line.
Arugam Bay curves around a crescent of golden sand on Sri Lanka's wild southeast coast, backed by coconut palms and the remnants of ancient fishing culture. The town is small enough to explore on foot, with colourful surf shacks, open-air cafes and boutique guesthouses lining a single main road. It feels wonderfully removed from the rest of the island.
Surfing is the headline act, with Main Point delivering long, rideable right-hand waves that suit beginners and intermediates alike. For non-surfers, the surrounding area holds remarkable wildlife. Pottuvil Lagoon shelters crocodiles, monitor lizards and wading birds, while Kumana National Park, a 45-minute drive south, protects 225 bird species alongside wild elephants, leopards and sloth bears. Elephant Rock, a scenic headland north of town, is a reliable spot for watching wild elephants at sunset.
When darkness falls, Arugam Bay comes alive. Beachside restaurants like Salty Swamis serve fresh tuna steaks and smoothie bowls while fairy lights flicker overhead. At Mama's, an all-you-can-eat curry buffet showcases eight or more Sri Lankan dishes that change nightly. The atmosphere is relaxed and communal, perfect for honeymooners who want romance without formality.
The dry season from April to October brings consistent sunshine and warm, surfable swells to the east coast. July to September delivers the best and most reliable waves, though the town is busiest during this peak window. May and June offer excellent weather with fewer visitors and better value accommodation, making them ideal shoulder months for honeymooners.
Arugam Bay lies roughly 320 kilometres east of Colombo, around six to seven hours by road. The scenic route passes through the hill country near Ella, offering a natural stopover. Cinnamon Air flies from Colombo to nearby Batticaloa Airport, cutting travel time to under two hours with a short onward drive. We arrange private transfers door to door, so you arrive relaxed and ready for the beach.
