Rainforest adventure base for white-water rafting, jungle treks and birdwatching
Kitulgala is where Sri Lanka's hill country meets the lowland rainforest, a small riverside town surrounded by dense tropical jungle and split by the fast-flowing Kelani River. For couples who want their honeymoon to include a genuine adrenaline rush, this is the place.
Your morning might start with a white-water rafting session through grade 2 and 3 rapids, followed by a rainforest trek to spot endemic birds and giant squirrels. By afternoon, you can swim beneath Aberdeen Falls or simply lie in a hammock at a riverside lodge while the jungle soundtrack plays overhead.
Tucked into a river valley just 90 kilometres east of Colombo, Kitulgala occupies one of the wettest corners of Sri Lanka. The result is an extraordinarily lush landscape of towering dipterocarp trees, vine-draped canopy and a river that runs year-round with enough force to power some of the island's best rapids. The town is compact, with a handful of lodges strung along the Kelani River banks, and the surrounding forest presses in on all sides.
Adventure dominates the agenda here. White-water rafting on the Kelani covers five rapids across roughly five kilometres, suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. Between rapids, the river flattens into calm stretches perfect for floating and swimming. Beyond the water, guided jungle treks lead through Kitulgala Forest Reserve, home to 54 bird species including the Sri Lanka spurfowl and green-billed coucal. The Belilena Cave, where 12,000-year-old remains of the prehistoric Balangoda Man were discovered, sits a short hike from town.
Evenings take a different tone. The Plantation Hotel, a restored coffee planter's bungalow overlooking the river, serves candlelit dinners on a wide verandah while fireflies drift through the garden. This is also where David Lean filmed The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957, and the concrete foundations of the film set are still visible on the riverbank.
January to March is the driest period, with warm days around 28 to 32°C and lower river levels ideal for safe rafting and clear jungle treks. May to December brings heavier rain that swells the Kelani River, creating stronger rapids for experienced rafters but making trails muddier. The wettest months of October and November are best avoided if you prefer dry conditions.
Kitulgala is just 90 kilometres from Colombo, making it one of the easiest hill-country destinations to reach. The drive takes roughly 90 minutes via the Colombo-Kandy highway, passing through rubber plantations and small towns. It also works well as a stopover between Colombo and the central highlands. We arrange private transfers for all our honeymooners, with pickups from Colombo, the airport or any connecting destination.
