Morning visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's holiest sites. Afternoon exploring the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya with its giant bamboo groves and orchid house. Evening Kandyan dance performance and lakeside dinner.

Board the morning train from Kandy for one of the world's great railway journeys. Seven hours through rolling tea estates, mountain tunnels and misty valleys. The scenery from Nanu Oya to Ella is the most spectacular stretch. Arrive in the cool hill country and check into your tea plantation hotel.

Sunrise walk to Nine Arches Bridge, a colonial-era stone viaduct set among tea bushes. Hike Little Adam's Peak for panoramic views across Ella Gap. Afternoon tea factory tour with tastings of single-estate Ceylon tea. Evening at leisure in this laid-back hill town.

Morning departure from Ella through lush valleys and past Ravana Falls. The drive takes you along Sri Lanka's southern coastline, stopping at Mirissa for a seafood lunch by the beach. Arrive at your boutique hotel inside the walls of Galle Fort by mid-afternoon.

Full day inside the UNESCO-listed fort. Walk the 16th-century ramparts, browse independent boutiques and contemporary galleries, and visit the iconic lighthouse. Long lunch at a courtyard restaurant. Watch the sunset from the ramparts with the Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon.

Morning at the beach with optional whale watching excursion from Mirissa harbour (seasonal, November to April). Afternoon free to explore the coast, surf at Weligama or simply unwind before your Maldives transfer tomorrow. Farewell Sri Lanka dinner on the fort rooftop.

Morning drive to Colombo for your short flight to Male. On arrival, board a seaplane for the 30-minute transfer to your private island resort. Touch down on the lagoon and step onto the jetty. Check into your overwater villa and watch the first Maldivian sunset from your deck.

First full day on the island. Morning snorkelling the house reef directly from your villa steps. Manta rays, sea turtles and parrotfish patrol the coral gardens below. Afternoon couples' spa treatment in an overwater pavilion. Dinner under the stars on the beach.

Morning diving excursion to nearby reef sites or water sports on the lagoon. Afternoon at leisure on the sandbank. Evening sunset dolphin cruise on a traditional dhoni, watching spinner dolphins leap around the bow.

Full-day excursion to a local island village and a deserted sandbank for a private picnic lunch. Snorkel a second reef site on the way back. Evening cocktails at the overwater bar.
